Our Community

Located at the base of Hoosier Pass in spacious Park County, the little town of Alma, Colorado is like a blast from the past, with an updated flair.  Historically a center for the local mining industry, Alma’s elevation at 10,578 feet above sea level makes it the highest incorporated town in North America.  This is where our office is located, and the small town atmosphere is one of the main reasons we chose it!

Centrally located in the state, Park County is easily accessible via either Highway 285 (which runs from Denver to Texas!) or from Highway 9 (just off I-70 at Frisco).  With a distance of about 15-30 or so miles from world class skiing in the Summit County area (Breckenridge, Keystone, Arapahoe Basin) Park County offers an affordable alternative to high resort area prices.  Get more for your money and still be close enough to work or play in Breckenridge!

Our Schools

Park County RE-2 Public School in Fairplay is preparing for big changes!  They will start breaking ground this spring for construction of a new campus!

Bristlecone Montessori School is a small privately funded school in Alma that currently offers Pre-K through 6th grade.

The Outdoors

Within Park County, there are portions of 3 wilderness areas, 2 state parks and 12 state wildlife areas.  Hikers, fishers, campers, bikers, 4-wheelers, back country skiers and the like frequent the area’s 14,000 foot peaks, trails, reservoirs and rivers.

Within an hour and a half, those who live in Denver or Colorado Springs can be in the Fairplay/Alma area to relax and retreat. The South Park Ranger District has an office in Fairplay and is a terrific resource for National Forest maps, driving tours and other local “outdoor” information. If you’re lucky, you might also get a Local to tell you their favorite trail!

Breckenridge, Keystone and Arapahoe Basin ski areas are just a quick drive over Hoosier Pass. Many of our locals live in the Alma/Fairplay area and work at the ski areas in Summit County every day. Just as many people have “discovered” our area because of our close proximity to these World Class skiing resorts, at a fraction of the cost of the resort towns!

Monarch Mountain is another excellent ski area located to our south via Highway 285 just past Salida.

Our History

Gold mining was once the main industry in our area. Today the South Park City Museum is a unique example of an 1880’s mining town. Restored buildings show what life was like in the days of the Gold Rush. Ranching still plays a part in the areas south of Fairplay. Cattle, bison, elk, deer, and antelope roam the grasslands, and the forests are home to bears, mountain lions, foxes, and lynx.

Our Businesses

The South Park Chamber of Commerce offers information about many of our local businesses.

Our Fun Events

Every year it seems that more and more events take place in our area that are open to the community! Festivals such as Burro Days, Alma Festival in the Clouds and the South Park Summer Festival are annual events that draw people from near and far. Many other events and activities are organized by the Alma Foundation or can be found in the local Community Calendar.

Our Government Offices

Building Permits and information about allowable uses of properties can all be obtained from the Park County Governmental Offices.
